When it comes to crafting a good book, there are certain indispensable ingredients, and one of them is undoubtedly the premise. At its core, the premise can be encapsulated in a simple yet profound question: “What do you want to tell?

The premise serves as a foundational element of the narrative, consisting of a few essential passages that shape the entire story. It is a guiding force that sets the direction and purpose of the author’s creative endeavor.

Understanding how to create a well-defined premise is crucial for any writer. Let’s explore the process of developing a compelling premise.

What is the Premise?

The premise of a novel is a key thread that weaves through the tapestry of storytelling. It distinguishes itself from the plot, which primarily focuses on the sequence of events. While the plot answers the question of “what happens”, the premise delves into the deeper question of “why do these events happen?”. It acts as the ultimate goal, providing the underlying motivation for the story to unfold in a particular way and reach a specific conclusion.
